April 20, 2024 Glen Rock Quads Report

As anticipation mounted for the grand Dr. Ostfeld Memorial ICA Championships, chess enthusiasts gathered for a captivating prelude – the Glen Rock Quads Chess Tournament. Scheduled on the eve of the prestigious event, it was envisioned as a quiet affair, a gentle warm-up before the storm. However, to our pleasant surprise, the chess community rallied, surpassing expectations with fervor.

Despite initial reservations about the turnout, the Glen Rock Quads Chess Tournament blossomed into a vibrant spectacle. Notably, the esteemed NM Yefim Treger not only graced the event with his formidable presence but also generously volunteered to pen the comprehensive tournament report, enriching the chess narrative with his insights and expertise.

Section 1 Report: By Yefim Treger

In my third April quad in a game with my other famous opponent Ido Alkin I had sacrificed two pieces to deliver a perpetual check! This resulted in a draw but I was proud of this result since after the difficult Pirc-opening I did not like my position much. The first key moment confirming that is given by the left position in the picture. Ido had just attacked my f6-knight by e5-pawn. And I came up with a temporal sacrifice of a pawn by playing Nf6-e4. Can White simply take this knight?

My idea is that if White takes this knight, I will play Bf5 with a contra-play (details are in the comments to the game). The second key moment had occurred when I sacrificed two pieces for delivering a perpetual check. You can see a final part of this moment in the right position of the picture, in which I had just played Bg7-h6.  White cannot retreat his bishop to g3 because of the pinned c1-Rook. Also White cannot include an intermediate trade of c-vertical rooks since after Rxc8 Black captures Bxf4 and a checkmate is inevitable. So White has to take h6-bishop. It actually happened in our game and I was glad by my bright play!
